Thames Walls
By Mercedes Balle

Thames Walls is a conceptually tactile masterpiece that tackles the idea of our troublesome relationship with nature, in this case, The River Thames. This work explores the physical as well as ideological boundaries which we built to subordinate the river. In the process of doing that, the natural walls of the river which in the past served as a hub for animals and flora of all sorts became just a unified set of man-made barricades. “Thames Walls” is Mercedes’ response to her work in the Estuary 2021 Associated Programme. Furthermore, this work also ponders the importance of the natural processes of death and change. However, as mentioned during the interview, it is an ongoing project, and this consideration is yet to be entirely dissected by Mercedes.
